5 Tips to Get the Most Out of Your Hole Saw

Choose the right hole saw for the job. Not all hole saws cut alike, whether you are tackling a general purpose application or a specific type of material. From MHS to carbide tipped to diamond grit-each has it's purpose.
Use the correct speed. Operating your hole saw at the proper speed is critical for both performance and longevity. Harder materials like stainless steel require slower speeds, while softer materials such as wood can be cut at higher speeds. Running at the correct speed will help prevent tooth stripping and excessive heat.
Don't overlook lubricant. Heat buildup is one of the biggest factors in premature tool wear. Using a lubricant, when able, will keep the teeth cool and help prolong the life of their cutting performance.
Understand pilot bits and their importance. Using a pilot bit helps give you an anchor point when you start your cut. This results in accurate hole placement and a smoother finish.
Avoid accidental thread lock. This can happen when you use a small (non-pin drive) arbor on a large diameter hole saw. The result is the hole saw twists onto the arbor, making it challenging to remove.
